How to Practice Effectively: The Best Drills for New Golfers

By Stephanie Zinser

Apr 1, 2025·3 mins

Practising golf effectively is key to improving your game, especially for new golfers. Here are some essential drills that can help you hone your skills and build a solid foundation.

  1. Grip and Posture Drill

Proper grip and posture are fundamental to a good golf swing. Practice holding the club with the correct grip, ensuring your hands are positioned comfortably. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and back straight. This drill helps ingrain the basics of a solid stance.

  1. Putting Drill

Putting is crucial for lowering your scores. Set up a series of tees or markers around a hole at different distances (3, 6, and 9 feet). Practice putting from each distance, focusing on maintaining a smooth and consistent stroke. This drill improves your accuracy and distance control on the greens.

  1. Chipping Drill

Chipping close to the hole can save strokes. Set up a small target area on the practice green. Use a variety of clubs (e.g., pitching wedge, sand wedge) and practice chipping the ball into the target zone. Focus on a smooth, controlled swing and consistent ball contact.

  1. Swing Path Drill

Using alignment sticks or clubs, create a path on the ground that represents the ideal swing path. Practice swinging along this path, ensuring your club follows the correct route from backswing to follow-through. This drill helps correct any out-to-in or in-to-out swing flaws.

  1. Balance Drill

Good balance is essential for a consistent swing. Practice hitting shots while standing on one leg or on a balance board. This drill enhances your stability and ensures a more controlled swing.

  1. Pitching Drill

Pitching involves hitting the ball high into the air with a soft landing. Set up targets at different distances (20, 40, and 60 yards). Practice pitching to these targets, focusing on a smooth tempo and a controlled finish. This drill improves your ability to hit accurate approach shots.

  1. Driving Drill

Hitting long, straight drives is a valuable skill. Place a tee in the ground and practice hitting the ball off the tee with your driver. Focus on maintaining a relaxed grip, smooth tempo, and balanced finish. Gradually increase your swing speed as you become more comfortable.

  1. Bunker Drill

Getting out of bunkers can be challenging. Practice hitting shots from a practice bunker, focusing on entering the sand a few inches behind the ball and following through. This drill improves your ability to escape bunkers and control the ball's trajectory.

  1. Alignment Drill

Proper alignment is crucial for accurate shots. Lay an alignment stick or club on the ground pointing towards your target. Practice setting up parallel to this stick, ensuring your feet, hips, and shoulders are aligned correctly. This drill promotes better shot direction.

  1. Routine and Mental Focus

Developing a pre-shot routine helps with consistency. Practice going through your routine before each shot, including visualising the shot, taking practice swings, and setting up. This drill enhances your focus and mental preparation for each shot.

By incorporating these drills into your practice routine, you'll build a solid foundation and improve your golf game. Remember, consistency and patience are key. Happy practising!
